Power for a motor? AC and DC
Can anyone tell me what's the difference between AC and DC in simple terms as I've looked it up and still a bit brain dead?
And I don't mean the band acdc before you spot it

Re: Power for a motor? AC and DC
Batteries, fuel cells all produce something called direct current (DC). The positive and negative terminals of a battery are always, respectively, positive and negative. Current always flows in the same direction between those two terminals.
The power that comes from a power plant, on the other hand, is called alternating current (AC). The direction of the current reverses, or alternates, 60 times per second (in the U.S.) or 50 times per second (in Europe, for example). The power that is available at a wall socket in the United States is 120-volt, 60-cycle AC power.
The big advantage that alternating current provides for the power grid is the fact that it is relatively easy to change the voltage of the power, using a device called a transformer. Power companies save a great deal of money this way, using very high voltages to transmit power over long distances.
How does this work? Well, let's say that you have a power plant that can produce 1 million watts of power. One way to transmit that power would be to send 1 million amps at 1 volt. Another way to transmit it would be to send 1 amp at 1 million volts. Sending 1 amp requires only a thin wire, and not much of the power is lost to heat during transmission. Sending 1 million amps would require a huge wire.
For Rc you will be using DC current. So for your drill powered tyre truer for example a motor bike 12v battery would supply enough volts and ampage to run it with ease. Another good powersource for your tyre truer would be a windscreen wiper motor that would power it easy with 12v.
The motor you were using before struggled and got hot because it needs a reduction in drive ratio just like a rc car needs a spur gear and pinnion in order to pull the load required. Or in this case spin the wheel against the load applied by the cutting tool.
Hope this helps

Re: Power for a motor? AC and DC
he said simple terms Tomo
Ac is Mains
Dc is battery
Ac is Mains
Dc is battery

Re: Power for a motor? AC and DC
Or like Tomo says
Ac = altenating curent and a sine wave pos neg pos neg thats why if you see on TV people get electricuted they shake thats the current
NEG ---__--__--__--__--__--__+POs up and down
Dc is a Flat sine wave
Neg -------------------------+Pos flat
Direct current or DC electricity is the continuous movement of electrons from an area of negative (−) charges to an area of positive (+)

Re: Power for a motor? AC and DC
Wicked guys thankyou for the replys. I understand now and will be using my bike battery as the weather is now kack so I won't be goin out on it for a while.
Just a quick note and don't laff but I have just finished the tyre true and it was working ok with the drill battery but didn't last long so I put it on charge and a pool of White smoke came from the charger and the plug??????? Bloody sh£t me up as I put the battery in the right way as is not possible to get it wrong as it would not fit the other way.
My daft question is WHY THE HELL DID THIS HAPPEN??????

Re: Power for a motor? AC and DC
i have a rule i follow with all electricity
if its in a battery use it to power things but dont open it
if its in a socket plug something into it but donf feck with it.
i found the 2nd rule out the hard was 3 years ago
